Community Organizing for Power
DC Youth Power Network (YPN) is leading an important training in June in collaboration with Washington Interfaith Network (WIN). Our training, Community Organizing for Power, is for youth workers—which we define as anyone who works in a formal capacity with youth, whether in an academic, recreational, arts, religious, or other setting—who are tired of the status quo in DC, and believe our young people deserve better.
Are YOU willing to build the necessary power to make DC a better place for our youth to live? This is the central question participants in our training will tackle.
We will also provide an overview of YPN’s power-building model, explain what it means to be a member of YPN, and discuss next steps. This is a CRUCIAL training for all youth-serving institutions that are considering involvement with YPN.
Please send as many staff members as possible to this training, not just one representative. Executive Directors and other senior leadership from your group are also strongly encouraged to attend, as are any longtime program volunteers. (Note: though YPN is starting its organizing work in Ward 1, youth-serving institutions from other parts of the city may attend).
If you are interested in attending, please contact James Pearlstein, YPN’s founder and Executive Director, at james.ypn@gmail.com as soon as possible.

As a follow-up to this training, YPN will host “house meetings” for 75-100 youth (ages 14-21) from your organizations at All Souls Church. House meetings are structured dialogue sessions with small groups designed identify potential youth leaders and key issues that they are willing to research and act on. Please lock the date into your calendars; James will send out an e-mail towards the end of June asking organizations to RSVP.
